A copy of the Cabbage Soup Diet recipe appeared approximately three decades ago. It is not known who came up with the diet, no one person or book can claim they have the official version. This diet has become popular as it can achieve weight loss very quickly. Most of the weight lost will not be fat, but instead, excess water.
The Cabbage Soup Diet (also known as Cabbage Soup Heart Diet, Heart Surgery Diet or Heart Patient Diet, Sacred Heart Soup Diet, Mayo Clinic Cabbage Soup Diet, Miracle Cabbage Soup Diet, American Heart Association Diet plan) has references to both the Mayo Clinic and the Sacred Heart Hospital and is thought to have been created for overweight heart surgery patients to lose weight fast prior to the surgery to minimize the risk of complications during surgery, but it seems unlikely that a medical institution would invent or put its name to a diet such as this. This diet has a well known tag line ‘lose ten pounds within seven days’, that’s about 4.54 kilos. No hospital or clinic would ever promote that, after all, one to two pounds a week of weight loss is considered the norm.
We strongly suggest that if you go ahead with the 7 day Cabbage Soup Diet plan and manage to reach the end of this diet, you must then switch to a healthy eating plan, not back to what you were possibly eating before. After all, what’s the point of achieving substantial weight loss in such a short time, only to put the weight back on again?
The books available on the market all vary, however, the original copy of the Cabbage Soup Diet consists simply of cabbage soup with some additional vegetables. The "New Cabbage Soup Diet" includes adding protein such as chicken or beef, so there are variants on the name: Cabbage Chicken Soup Diet, Cabbage Beef Soup Diet and Cabbage and Chicken Soup Diet.
This diet is severely calorie restricted, providing approximately 500 calories per day. So how much cabbage soup can you eat each day? Well, as much as you like. The single great thing about this diet is that it will stop you from eating unhealthy snacks and processed foods and instead you will eat lots of fresh vegetables and some fruit.
Cabbages are full of vitamins and minerals. They contain more vitamin C than an orange and are also full of vitamins B6 and E. They are thought to have anti-cancer benefits and contain two powerful antioxidants – the flavonoids complex and sulforaphane. Cabbages are also full of fiber.
There are many varieties of cabbage, but for this soup we’d suggest either the green cabbage or the savoy cabbage. Personally we’d choose the savoy as it’s such a good looking vegetable. When purchasing, check that the outer leaves look fresh, vibrant and crispy and the vegetable should feel heavy. Learn about calories in cabbage.
This Cabbage Soup Diet menu should be closely followed. You can drink lots of water. Alcohol is not permitted.

How to make Cabbage Soup.
To make the soup, simply add all
the ingredients into a large saucepan, cover with water or a vegetable
stock (stock will make it more tasty), bring to the boil and let it
simmer for 10 minutes. In our research one book suggested boiling for
two hours. That seems ridiculous as all the vitamins from the vegetables
will have disappeared. Additionally if cabbage is overcooked, it gives
off an unpleasant odour. If you use stock to cook the soup, do not add
any more seasoning.
Here is one of the variations of the Cabbage Soup Diet recipe:
Season to taste and add some spices if you like. You can also add chopped herbs at the end.
A word of warning: The cabbage family contains goitrogens, therefore if you suffer from thyroid problems, you should avoid this diet.
