Blue cheese is the general name of cheese which has blue veins running through them, normally created by having Penicillium added. The cheese is normally made from cow’s milk, but some varieties may be made with either sheep’s or goats’ milk, and is very strong in taste.

Blue cheeses are high in fat, approx. 25g-30g per 100g, so avoid if you need to lose weight. They provide a great source of protein and calcium. In addition, they contain vitamins A, B1-B3, B5, B6, B12, D, E, K, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, selenium and many other minerals.

Given its high calcium content, Blue cheese is great for healthy bones and teeth. Other Blue cheese benefits are thought to include the prevention of gout.

Cheese in general contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).
